fairy tale things: Hanna

So tonight I watched a movie called Hanna, starring Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett. The movie isn't ordinarily something I'd consider putting on my blog under the title "fairy tale things", except for the fact that the film is heavily, heavily influenced by fairy tales!

(I love her long, white blonde hair + her blonde blonde eyebrows. Makes her look otherworldly!)

The plotline is: sixteen year old Hanna has been trained by her father to become an assassin. She has never been part of the modern world, raised in a forest with her father. She goes on her own into the world for a mission across Europe, while ruthless CIA agents hunt her. The plotline alone raises several fairy tale comparisons: young, beautiful girl (without a mother) who has been kept away from society finds herself being hunted.

The visuals really call upon the fairy tale motif as well. There are countless beautiful shots that the director Joe Wright (famous for Atonement and Pride and Prejudice) uses to really bring about this feeling. Even some of the dialogue is taken directly from fairy tales!

(See this beautiful shot?! Hanna and the wolf. Wonderful!)

It was a great action movie, a lot of fun, and beautifully reminiscent of fairy tales! If you want a fun thriller, I really recommend it!

Confession!

I have a major confession to make... I love horror movies!

I used to be terrified of them, but my brother is a fanatic, and in university, I've taken not one but two classes dedicated to horror movies or horror literature. It's a lot of fun for me to read into the the movies, think about the "rules" of horror movies and what it means... I know, I'm such a nerd.

However, because I love reading too much into horror movies, my favorite is the original Scream! We rewatched it last night and today we went to see the new Scream 4, so much fun!

So in honor of Screams 1-4, tell me! What's your favorite scary movie?

Book/Movie Review: Rosemary's Baby

I am taking a Gothic literature & film class this semester and I love it! It's one of my favorite classes. Anyway, for the class we had to read Rosemary's Baby by Ira Levin and we'll be watching the film on Tuesday.

As a semi-horror movie buff, I've already seen the movie and I've always really loved it. I was eager to read the book, and to my surprise, it's almost exactly like the film. However, in the transition from book to screen, I think something was gained! While the book is interesting and a fun read, I very much prefer the film. I think the visuals really make the story, and there's a slight enough difference for me to prefer one over the other.

I suggest the book, but I HIGHLY suggest the movie. This is a rare time when I'll suggest the movie over the book! Maybe you disagree with me! Let me know what you think.

Although this film is very famous for her chic short haircut, I love this cute bob.

I love this outfit! I'm dying for a Peter Pan collared shirt/dress.

Spooky!

Happy Friday!
