fairy tale things: Golden Globes!

Photobucket

So I love love love awards shows. It's a silly addiction, but luckily my roommate Casie also loves award shows. I love the fashion, the silly jokes from the hosts, the music sequences. The Oscars are my favorite, but I love the Golden Globes as well.

Of course, I can't be a fairy tale addict without mentioning Olivia Wilde's dress.

Usually I kind of roll my eyes at ballgowns, but oh my gosh. She looks like she's wearing stars!

Photobucket

Boys outfits I usually ignore- they all wear suits of course!- but my favorite little boy star recently dressed super cute. Darren Criss, popular from Glee but also from YouTube's A Very Potter Musical.

One thing to know about me: I LOVE bow ties! I love love bow ties. And I think his glasses are cute.

My favorite winner of the night was Colin Firth. I love love love Colin Firth! He's an amazing actor and I adore him. However, my second favorite win was Chris Cofler. He's a sweet kid and I'm glad he won. Glee wasn't perhaps the most deserving of the win for the show, I think his acting has been amazing and his speech was sweet.

It was a fun night overall, and I was so happy Toy Story 3 won! I wanted the King's Speech to win, but I liked The Social Network. I'm so excited to see the Oscars!

book review: The Book of Lost Things

Photobucket

I read. A lot. More than a lot. All the time, I read constantly and consistently. Sometimes I have to take breaks when I'm in school- as an English major, I have enough to read! But overall, I love to read and I like to share my reviews, especially of books I liked.

I read this book, John Connolly's The Book of Lost Things over winter break. It was a gift from my brother, and one of my favorite books I've read recently. The story follows as such: A young boy named David loses his mother. His father remarries and David feels angry and left out. He escapes into a world of fantasy- possibly of his imagination, possibly of other people's. The world he gets lost in is one of fairy tales and magic.

The book goes through many of the popular fairy tales, and retells them in an even darker fashion. The popular princess stories- Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty- are told darker, and with many of the princesses featured as villains. If you don't like dark retellings, this book is definitely not for you! The fairy tales featured are often violent and sexual, so beware! The book is not for children or the faint of heart.

Here's me reading the first few sentences of the book. Please enjoy and please reading the book!

It's been awhile, and I apologize! I started school and that's always complicated haha.

What I wore my first day of school. I realize my hair is crazy. I need to get it cut!
My favorite shoes. The dress is F21, the tights and shoes are Target.

I thought I'd share some of my small Disney collection today! It's still growing, but I really like it haha.

Oh gosh, there's a lunchbox, a coin purse, a diary, a ceramic paint it yourself Ariel, a piggy bank, three Cutesters from the Disney Vinyl collection, two Belles!, stickers, coloring books, Wicked poison apple-flavored mints.

A princess photo frame, some Kingdom Hearts postcards.

My newest edition, a Rapunzel doll as a Christmas present from my roommate Sarah.

My Belle dolls. The one on the left sings! I got it from my amazing penpal Ameneh.

I have more at my home in Phoenix, but these are the ones I have in Tucson!

Photobucket

I also collect Disney princess coloring books! However, I don't just collect them. I watercolor and embroider them! Haha I know this is so weird and I honestly don't have an explanation for why I do it. I think it's pretty!

With a large coloring book, I can embroider skin and hair, but with smaller, normal sized ones I just do small portions.

Like so!

Thanks for looking at my nerdy Disney collection. Have a great day!

fairy tale things: Pushing Daisies!

Photobucket

One of my favorite shows of all time is Pushing Daisies. It was a brief show, it only ran two seasons before it got canceled. It's one of my favorite shows of all time because it contains some of my favorite aspects:

  • fairy tale: The show revolves around a man named Ned, called the Pie-maker, who has the power to revive the dead with a touch, but if he touches them again, they return to being dead. He revives his childhood sweetheart Charlotte, called Chuck, and they continue their romance without touching. They also solve crimes. The combination of sweetness and creepness is my favorite thing about fairy tales, which this show has in spades: sweetness and murder and death.
  • fashion: the fashion of this show is INSANE. It is so so so good. Chuck has beautiful clothing in every episode. If I could have any wardrobe in the world, it would be Chuck's. Additionally, the set design of the show is beautiful.

  • the writing: The writing is sweet and fast. I love their quick dialogue. They also embrace wordplay: Charlotte's full name is Chuck Charles, their partner is named Emerson Cod, the shop Ned works at is called the Piehole. The narration is also wonderful, like a fairy tale.
  • the food! The show is about pies. Enough said.
  • the romance: I love love love the actor who plays Ned- his name is Lee Pace and he's truly one of my favorite actors. I also think he's super gorgeous! The romance is so cute and sweet.

on a serious note

Yesterday, Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head and many other innocent people were injured in my town of Tucson, Arizona.

I'm back in Tucson after winter break, and my heart is breaking for the victims and this city. I am horrified and truly upset about this shocking incident.

I'm keeping Gabrielle and the other victims in my thoughts and I hope you all will too.

disney day

Photobucket

One of my most beloved obsessions is my Disney obsession. It goes hand in hand with my fairy tale obsession, and I collect Disney princess items. On this blog, I'd like to do a simple little feature once a week where I post pretty Disney-related images I find on the Internet. It may have a theme or quotes or musings, and it may not!

I actually named this blog from a lyric from Disney's
Peter Pan. From the song "You Can Fly!", which is, "All it takes is faith and trust/But the thing that's a positive must/Is a little bit of pixie dust." I figured that because of this, Peter Pan deserves to be the theme of my first Disney day!

ADVENTURE TIME!: Macarons

(found on weheartit)
So one of my very favorite things is going on little mini-adventures. Like the hero of my new favorite show, as well as the show's title, my favorite time is ADVENTURE TIME! It doesn't take a lot for me to consider something an adventure: a new recipe to try with friends, an unusual place to go, a long drive. As long as you go with the right mindset, pretty much anything can be an adventure.

For this adventure, I wanted to try the french dessert macarons for the first time. They've taken over the blogosphere, they're beautiful little treats and have always looked so delicious. Living primarily in Tucson, I haven't been able to find them. However, in Phoenix, which is a much bigger city, Google was my friend and I found some in a bakery in Tempe! I dragged my brother along for...

According to Wikipedia, the source of all truthful and factual knowledge, macarons are made from made with egg whites, icing sugar, granulated sugar, almond powder or ground almond, and food coloring, with a buttercream or jam filling. Mmm!

My brother Danny and I went to a bakery in Tempe called Essence! I got a dozen mini-macarons for not a small sum, but I was eager to try!

The box on the outside...

The glorious and super cute pastries on the inside!

They were, of course, very delicious! I prefer the chocolate ones to the fruit ones, although my favorite might have actually been the lemon! Hmm! I guess I'll have to try more to make sure... I shared with my sweet brother, who drove me through the rain to find these special treats!

My parents also tried them too for the first time, and we all of course really liked them! I'm pretty sure they're all gone by now... So good!

Maybe a future ADVENTURE TIME! post will feature me trying to bake these delicious delicacies... But I'm NOT a chef/baker by any means, so this might be dangerous! At any rate, these were really good and I'm so glad I went out and found some!

I don't know how often ADVENTURE TIME! will occur, but hopefully pretty frequently! I also plan on making a post about the show Adventure Time! and the Style Queens it features, such as Princess Bubblegum and Marceline the Vampire Queen!
